How to Choose a Desk Lamp for Your Home Office
Choose light around the work you actually do, and the space you actually have.
Start with the task
Reading paper, drawing, and working at a screen place different demands on your lighting. Look for a position that lights the work surface without shining into your eyes or reflecting in the screen.
Check the footprint and reach
Measure the free space on your desk. A clamp can free up surface area, but check the manufacturer’s mounting requirements and your desk edge before choosing one. An adjustable arm should reach the area where you work.
Think about controls
A control within easy reach makes everyday adjustments simpler. Check the exact model for dimming, adjustable color temperature, and whether settings are remembered. These features are not universal.
Before you decide
Check the power source, cord length, included components, and dimensions against the manufacturer’s current information. Add a little ambient light around the desk so your screen is not the only bright object in the room.
